Signed limited edition, number 288 of 350 large paper copies signed by both Milne and Shepard, printed on handmade paper. Limited signed editions of the first Winnie-the-Pooh story book are increasingly scarce. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, published in 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's teddy bear, bought at Harrods for Christopher's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear and later renamed Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor. It was published in the UK in three issues: an extra limited issue of 20 copies bound in vellum, the present limited issue of 350 copies on large paper, and a regular trade issue. This is the first title of the series to be issued in this format: there was no equivalent issue of the first book, When We Were Very Young (1924), as the magnitude of its success had not been anticipated. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. A Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket. Fresh cloth and bright gilt, having been well protected by the dust jacket. Near Fine jacket with some (unnecessary) tape reinforcements on the verso. Spine just a bit toned. First state jacket with "117th thousand" at the top of the rear panel. A.A. Milne would write the Pooh stories after being inspired by his son, Christopher Robin, and his stuffed animals, one of which was a bear named "Winnie." Milne had written prolifically in other modes and genres, but the Pooh books would go on to outshine all his other works. Indeed, Winnie The Pooh has been listed on the New York Public Library's 100 greatest children's books of the century and the Ashdown Forest, where the stories take place, has become a tourist attraction as a result. "I think Pooh's secret is the kindness and generosity of spirit of the characters toward each other" (NYPL). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. FIRST EDITION of Milne's classic. A beautiful copy in rare original decorated dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Ernest Shepard. In 1926, Milne "wrote Winnie-the-Pooh, a collection of stories he had developed about Christopher Robin and his beloved stuffed friends. The stories begin with Christopher Robin's pleas to the author to tell Winnie-the-Pooh stories about himself 'because he's that sort of Bear' and conclude when Christopher Robin goes to take his bath, promising to ask for more stories the following day. In between, the author spins tales of the animals' adventures in the forest where they and Christopher Robin ostensibly live. Each animal character is developed carefully and shown to be a little flawed--Pooh is a glutton, Piglet is timid, Eeyore is gloomy Owl is pompous. These characterizations allow Christopher Robin to play the 'adult' role in this world, stepping in to calm fears and solve problems, while remaining enough of a child to suggest games and enjoy parties. The same calm assurance found in Milne's poems that nothing really bad happens in the outdoors permeates the book, in which storms may come and bees occasionally sting, but everything ultimately works out for the best." Winnie-the-Pooh, one of the world's most celebrated children's books, "has been translated into many languages, including Latin" (Encyclopedia of Children's Literature). MILNE, A.A. Winnie-the-Pooh. London: Methuen & Co., Ltd., 1926. Octavo, original cloth gilt, original dust jacket; custom presentation box. Usual toning at gutter of endpaper maps but otherwise book fine, with cloth gilt exceptionally bright. Original dust jacket in outstanding condition, bright and fresh, with only a faint band of toning (about a half inch) along the top of the jacket and a tiny bit of wear at the top of the spine. A magnificent copy; rare in such good condition. Original cloth with dust-jacket.

Signed limited edition, number 141 of 350 large paper copies signed by Milne and Shepard, printed on handmade paper. Limited signed editions of the first Winnie-the-Pooh story book are increasingly scarce. This copy includes an autograph letter signed by Milne discussing a publishing agreement, a contribution to a periodical, an injury, and his wonder at the value of limited editions. This copy includes an autograph letter signed to George Henry Grubb (1875-1934), a director of the publishing firm of Putnam and Co. in London. Milne writes with reference to a publishing agreement (presumably for Three Plays) and states that he is "afraid that the amateur rights must be left in the hands of Samuel French". He admits to having "let myself in for many too many Christmas numbers" and therefore declines an invitation to contribute to the magazine Tit-Bits. Milne regrets not having written before but explains he had "idiotically twisted my inside, playing with Bill and tore some muscles: with the result that I've been strapped up for the last week, and felt too uncomfortable to do anything but lean against cushions and read. a cough or a sneeze or a laugh is agony, so I avoid draughts of humorous books". Milne concludes by asking "did you see in the Times last week that a copy of the limited edition of W[hen] W[e] W[ere] V[ery] Y[oung] went for £53. The record so far." John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, Vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-39, item IIB. Small quarto. Original dark blue cloth-backed blue paper covered boards, front cover with paper label lettered in black, edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Together with an undated autograph note signed ("A.A. Milne") from Milne to G. H. Grubb, 1 leaf (190 x 140 mm), headed notepaper ("13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3.") Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard, folding map at end. Corners bumped, browning to free endpapers, gatherings unopened, some slight foxing to top edge; a near-fine copy. Extremities of dust jacket worn with loss to head and foot of spine, covers and spine toned; a good example of the jacket. Light browning to letter, together with removed staple holes; a near-fine letter.

Fine Binding. Condition: Very Good. Ernest H Shepard (illustrator). A beautifully bound set of A A Milne's classic children's works featuring his anthropomorphic bear Winnie the Pooh. From the library of Julian's Park, which was once home to the Socialite Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Comprising early editions of these works. 'Winnie The Pooh' is a second edition of 1926;? 'House at Pooh Corner' is a third edition of 1929; 'When We Were Very Young' is a Nineteenth Edition of 1929,? 'Now We Are Six' is a fifth edition of 1929.?Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. This set of best selling works comprises of the first volume of stories solely regarding Pooh, 'Winnie-The-Pooh', and two poetry collections, 'Now We Are Six' and 'When We Were Very Young'. 'Now We are Six' contains thirty-five verses, eleven of which are accompanied by illustrations featuring Winnie-The-Pooh. 'When We Were Very Young' contains forty-four poems, including 'Teddy Bear' which, upon its initial publication in 'Punch' magazine, was the first literary appearance of Winnie-The-Pooh. The introduction to 'When We Were Very Young' implies that the narrator may be Christopher Robin. These works are illustrated by E H Shepard, a popular twentieth century illustrator whose pen and ink drawings were featured in all of Milne's works.Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with their binder's stamp to the front pastedown. All volumes are in a half calf binding, with gilt tooled silhouettes of the characters Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit and Piglet to the spines.? The boards are covered in charming paper which has a repeated animal motif. This same paper is used for the endpapers.? Pleydell-Bouverie was a close friend of Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He often bound books for her as gifts.?From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII.? She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the spines and extremities. Fading to the spine of 'When We Were Very Young'. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, 'Sangorski and Sutcliffe'. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Very Good. book.
