First Edition. First Printing. Oblong quarto (25.5cm x 23.75cm); pictorial paper-covered boards and grey cloth backstrip; pictorial endpapers; dustjacket; [40]pp; illus. Inscribed by Sendak on the upper half-title page, surrounding a small drawing of Max: "Jan.9, 63 / For Richard + Sandy / with much affection! Maurice Sendak." Gentle sunning to upper and lower board edges, light wear to spine ends and lower board edges, with minute exposure to one lower corners, and a shallow (1/2 cm) indentation to cloth at lower front joint; contents fresh, with the binding sound; Near Fine. In the correct dustjacket, without the Caldecott Medal sticker on the front panel, priced $3.50 at upper front flap, with lower corner clipped by the publisher, next to a 40-80 / 1163 code; modest wear, sunning, and dust-soil to spine and panels, shallow loss to spine ends, with two closed tears to lower panels closest to the spine, another to upper front joint, and a few small, faint splash marks to lower half of spine (most evident on verso); an unrestored, Very Good example. An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. The earliest we have traced were all inscribed (likely as holiday gifts) in December, 1963, to illustrator Hilary Knight, Sendak's friend and psychoanalyst Bert Slaff, and to Louise Halsey. Hanrahan A58; Grolier 97 (One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. MAURICE SENDAK (illustrator). 1st Edition. Harper & Row, New York 1963 SIGNED FIRST STATE of the First Edition, First Printing Fine/Near Fine First Printing Book, in a bright Near fine First state dust jacket, SIGNED WITH A WILD THING DRAWING by Maurice Sendak on a sheet pasted onto the half title page. All first state points present. The identifying points for the first state dust jacket include the unique content of the information found only on the First State jacket flaps (no mention of the Caldecott award, and instead includes a three paragraph blurb about Sendak on the rear flap and a three paragraph blurb about the book on the front inner flap). The first state book is equally unique in that the colors of the inks used on the end papers as well as many of the internal pages are different from the later printings. Unpaginated. Please see detailed images. The book has crisp boards in fine condition. The corners are sharp, with one very tiny tip bump, and the book has no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The book is in beautiful condition for this title which is often found with scribbles, writing, ruined spines, edgewear and other issues that revolve around first edition children?s books. Instead this book has bright, clean boards with no fading, only a slight hint of toning, no staining and no scribbles. The book has a fantastic signed original drawing of the Wild Thing ?Moishe? by Maurice Sendak who signed the drawing ?Maurice Sendak?. The stunning end papers are in perfect condition. The internal pages are extremely clean, bright and flat wand still retain their original rigidity. Delicate owner name to the first blank page (verso of the end paper), otherwise no inscriptions, no bookplates, no writing, no stains, no handling marks, no rips, no bent pages, no stains and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, bright copy of a children?s book in hard to find condition! The book comes with a near fine scarce original first state, first edition dust jacket in unusually bright condition. The first state is exclusively determined by the content of the information found on the inner front and rear flaps. A three paragraph blurb should be on the front inner flap with the bottom of flap having the requisite code of 40-80, and 1163; there should be NO MENTION of the Caldecott Award on either flap, and the rear flap should have a three paragraph blurb about Maurice Sendak. The dust jacket has strong vibrant colors, and has benefited from very slight restoration to the outer spine tips by an expert paper conservator. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of $3.50. A very handsome example of this scarce title presenting very well with the stunning jacket and clean crisp interior. International shipping via UPS, tracking and insured. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our ABE store for other landmark children's rare books. Signed by Author(s).

First edition of the 25th anniversary edition of one of the most desirable books in modern childrenā s literature. Oblong quarto, original cloth backed pictorial paper boards. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Gloria Burton Maurice Sendak." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Hailed as "the Picasso of children's books," Maurice Sendak produced more than 85 books, of which Where the Wild Things Are is undeniably the most famous, being one of the ten best-selling children's books of all time. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Basis for the 2009 film directed by Spike Jonze starring Max Records and features the voices of James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O'Hara, and Chris Cooper.

  • Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 2009. Pictorial book-length account on subject. One of the best books on film adaptation and film-making ever published in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Spike Jonze's "Heads On And We Shoot: The Making of 'Where The Wild Things Are' (With Complete Screenplay) ". His ground-breaking film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved classic, together with the film itself on two discs. The lavishly produced book is presented in three parts, accordion-style: a) "Heads On And We Shoot", which describes the actual making of the film, with drawings, original artwork, reference materials, and photographs; b) the Screenplay by Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers, interspersed with Interviews and film stills; and c) "Post-Production", which consists of special effects, brilliantly reproduced on the page. "The film incorporates the most dynamic elements of voice performance, live-action puppetry, and computer animation into a live-action adventure story that captures the magic of the book, and takes it to a new dimension. In order to preserve the realistic nature of the film, 'The Wild Things' was not created digitally. Instead, Spike Jonze brings these characters to life in the form of physical suits built by the Jim Henson Company. These creatures, operated by a suit performer, interact with the live actor playing Max on set in front of the camera. After principal photography was finished, CGI was used to make the creatures completely life-like and convincing" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Spike Jonze, Maurice Sendak, and Dave Eggers collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Spike Jonze. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a pristine copy of the double-disc DVD and Blu-ray combo set, also very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in matching silver pen-marker in front by Spike Jonze. This title is a film classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with signed double-disc set) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed set thus. Three of the most brilliant American artist/writers of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO DAVE EGGERS' "THE WILD THINGS" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0061645567.
