Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Lindlof, Ed (Wrapper Illustration) (illustrator). First Edition. 1980 at title page and copyright page. Stated eighth printing. Oatmeal colored full cloth boards, black stylized spine titles, fine. Matte mustard lime endpapers. Pages fine; no writing. Bind fine, square. Dust wrapper, slight wear; unclipped 14.95, protected in new clear sleeve. Wrapper features gold medallion at front panel: "Winner of The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction". Sadly, the author, John Kennedy Toole, took his own life at 32, after facing consistent rejection from nearly every American publisher. Toole's mother, finally was able to have her son's work posthumously published; and, as fate would have it, the satirical novel won the Pulitzer Prize. "A masterwork of comedy. pungent slapstick, sature and intellectual incongruities. make for a grand comic fugue" (New York Time). Presented here is "a great slob of a man in violent revolt against the entire twentieth century!" This book's unusual path to success began in 1976 when John Kennedy Toole's mother Thelma, using a walker, hobbled into the office of novelist Walker Percy at Loyola University. She was followed by a chauffeur carrying a manuscript that she told Mr. Percy was a ''masterpiece''. Percy reluctantly agreed to read it. He became entranced as he read, and decided that the novel was ''a major achievement, a huge comic-satiric-tragic one-of-a-kind rendering of life in New Orleans.'' After several more publishers rejected the book, Louisiana State University Press agreed to take a chance with a first printing of only 2,500. The soon to be Pulitzer Prize winner went on to 50,000 copies in hard cover and nearly 600,000 in paperback within three years. Manufactured in the United States of America. 338 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing), issued a year after the considerably more common US edition. 8vo. vii, 338pp. Cream boards lettered in gold at the spine. Top edge very lightly spotted, and with a little staining to the fore edge. Some uneven toning to the backstrip cloth, which appears to be a fault common to this production. Former owner name boldly inked to the front free endpaper, and a few inked words to the rear pastedown. A good bright copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, quite faded at the spine panel and with the publisher's laminate lifting a fraction in one small area. The author's posthumously published Pulitzer Prize-winning debut, detailing the many, many mis-adventures of the oh-so splendidly named Ignatius Jacques Reilly. (Toole penned his novel 'The Neon Bible' first, at the age of just sixteen, but it was not published until nearly a decade later). This UK edition was supposedly limited to 1,500 copies, one thousand less than the US edition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Louisiana State University Press - LSU Press, Baton Rouge. 1980. 338 pages. First edition, third printing, stated. Original DJ with $12.95 price intact on DJ flap and no Pulitzer sticker on front; or any mention of the Pulitzer anywhere on DJ. Walker Percy blurb on rear; however this is the second state DJ with the Chicago Sun Times blurb in the black area, at the top of DJ rear. Despite this, the DJ remains desirable thanks to no Pulitzer mention, hence an early printing. Binding and hinges are strong. Panels, endpapers and pages are all bright and clean; no writing within. Book's only flaw is a minor one; three consecutive pages' cornertips were dogeared, and since flattened-out. In regards to the DJ, Shallow shelf-rub induced chips at crown, and corner folds. Small closed edge tear along rear top edge. A touch of soiling to DJ front, and rear flap. Considering the first printing of this Pulitzer winner was a minuscule 2,500 copies, these early printings remain sought after. Sadly, the author committed suicide, and had no idea his manuscript would ever be published, let alone go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. VG+/VG.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Foreword by Walker Percy. A fine and tight copy (with none of the usual splaying of the boards) in fine first issue dust jacket. Housed in a custom quarter morocco gilt and cloth clamshell case. Advance Review Copy with the publisher's printed slip laid in, as well as a letter from the Louisiana State University Press sending along this review copy. Posthumously published novel that was the first work of fiction published by Louisiana State University Press, and which had a very small first printing (reportedly 2500 copies). Initially the book was rejected by dozens of publishers and the author committed suicide in 1969. Years later the author's mother brought the manuscript to Walker Percy, insisting that he read it. Percy championed the book, arranged for its publication, and contributed an introduction. Excellent reviews and word of mouth led to it becoming a bestseller, and eventually winning the Pulitzer Prize. A book which has become exceptionally uncommon. An especially nice copy, and uncommon Advance Review Copy. *Burgess 99.*.

The book's passage to success began in 1976 when John Kennedy Toole's mother Thelma, using a walker, hobbled into the office of the novelist Walker Percy at Loyola University. She was followed by a chauffeur carrying a manuscript that she told Mr. Percy was a ''masterpiece.'' Percy agreed to read it. He became entranced and decided that the novel was ''a major achievement, a huge comic-satiric-tragic one-of-a-kind rendering of life in New Orleans.'' After some more publishers rejected the book, Louisiana State University Press agreed to take a chance with a first printing of just 2,500 copies. It sold about 50,000 copies in hard cover and nearly 600,000 in paperback within three years of publication.
