First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the half title. The Handmaid's Tale won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1985. This Canadian edition precedes all others. The work has secured Atwood's place as one of the most prominent writers of the 20th century. Her choice to construct Gilead - the setting of the book - from real-world events has sustained its relevance across decades, finding new readers and fuelling academic debates. Atwood later explained that, while writing the novel, "I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. I did not wish to be accused of dark, twisted inventions, or of misrepresenting the human potential for deplorable behaviour". The novel has been adapted into a film (1990), an opera (2000), and most influentially, in 2017, a highly popular television series. "Margaret Atwood on How She Came to Write the Handmaid's Tale", Literary Hub, 25 April 2018, available online. Octavo. Original red and cream boards, spine lettered in cream, red endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends rubbed, one corner bumped; jacket bright, ends of spine panel and corners rubbed and creased, couple of short tears to extremities, one with small and neat tape on verso, couple of small marks, not price-clipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
