Paperback. Condition: New. 254 This book is an attempt to provide a convenient and helpful guide to Samuel Beckett s fiction by tracing (in three phases) the evolution of the hero in his novels and the development of his style in English and French from the first manuscript Dream of Fair to Middling Women to the most recent work How it is.Since unwieldy apparatus would be out of place in a general work of this kind, quotations are not usually provided with page numbers, footnotes are generally avoided, and the list of criticism is kept to a minimum. The work includes several translated extracts from some of Beckett s typescripts. The Bibliography of Samuel Beckett s writings is as near as possible complete; it should clarify less wellknown aspects of his activity. With this work, the broad aim of the author has not been to seek any specious explanation of the fiction but simply to assist the interested reader in exploring it for himself. John Fletcher was a Jacobean playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; during his lifetime and in the early Restoration, his fame rivalled Shakespeare's. Though his reputation has been far eclipsed since, Fletcher remains an important transitional figure between the Elizabethan popular tradition and the popular drama of the Restoration. Fletcher began to work with Francis Beaumont probably about 1607, at first for the Children of the Queen s Revels and its successor and then mainly for the King s Men at the Globe and Blackfriars theatres. After 1613, he often collaborated with or had his plays revised by Philip Massinger, who actually succeeded him in 1625 as chief playwright of the King s Men. The best of Fletcher s comedies, for urbanity and consistency of tone, is probably The WildGoose Chase, a play of episodes alive with irony and easy wit. Hardcover. Condition: New. 163 ABOUT THE BOOK: This book Narratives of Deconstruction: A Postcolonial Study of Select Dalit Fiction is my research. Being thematic in nature, the book is divided into five chapters. The main objective of the book is to bring out the common issues in the select Dalit realistic narratives. Instead of going for a mere textual analysis, I focused on the indepth analysis of each novel taking the thematic issues into consideration. The text deals with the life aspects of Dalit communities. Dalit literature as a form, from its simplest beginning has now grown into a special and unique form of literature that aims at protesting for the civil rights, especially of the marginalized sections of the country including tribes and minorities. Dalit Novels among the other literary forms remains a successful genre in representing the issues of Dalit culture and movements in Dalit idiom. It is through Dalit Novels, the writers express their sufferings, sorrows and victimization due to the oppressive culture of caste Hindus. The Dalit novel makes the reader understand that insecure childhood, ever dependence for the assistance of the Government, Sociocultural oppression, gender dominance, exploitation in paying the daily wages, sexual harassment at the workplaces and physical attacks, police cases and political influence are the day to day experiences of the Dalits. Through their memories, the Dalits reconstruct their broken and long silenced history and demonstrate their rights and identity duly reconstituting themselves with the rest of Dalit communities. The Dalit novel is of rich experiences of the Dalits and paved the way for the formation of their col lect ive consciousnes srightly identifying themselves to fight against the Caste and Gender hierarchy. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. U.S. Saranya holds a B.Ed, M.A and PhD in English. She is presently placed as Assistant Professor of English in VIT University , Bhopal. She has 53 publications to her credit which includes 3 Scopus, 14 Ebsco, 18 online research papers and 18 conference proceedings. Paperback. Condition: New. 357 About The Book: The Potter's Thumb' is a novel written by Flora Annie Webster Steel. The story begins with two Englishmen, Dan Fitzgerald and George Keene, coming across a mother and her sick child on a dust heap in the city of Hodinuggur. The child is suffering from a condition called "the potter's thumb," which is said to be caused by a slip in the molding process when the potter is working with clay. The mother explains that many children are born with this condition and that it often leads to death. Fitzgerald is moved by the sight and reflects on the history and current state of the city and its people, noting that it is a place where past and present civilizations clash and overlap."The potter's thumb?" echoed Dan Fitzgerald, interrogatively. He was a tall man, broad in the shoulder, lean in the flank, and extraordinarily handsome; yet the most noticeable quality in the face which was looking down at the very ordinary woman squatting upon a very ordinary dustheap was not its beauty, but its vitality. About The Author: Flora Annie Steel (2 April 1847 12 April 1929) was a writer who lived in British India for 22 years. She was noted especially for books set in the Indian sub-continent or connected with it. Her novel On the Face of the Waters (1896) describes incidents in the Indian Mutiny. She was born Flora Annie Webster at Sudbury Priory, Sudbury, Middlesex, the sixth child of George Webster. Her mother, Isabella MacCallum, was an heiress.?In 1867 she married Henry William Steel, a member of the Indian Civil Service, and they lived in India until 1889, chiefly in the Punjab, with which most of her books are connected. She grew deeply interested in native Indian life and began to urge educational reforms on the government of India. Mrs Steel herself became an Inspectress of Government and Aided Schools in the Punjab and also worked with John Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling's father, fostering Indian arts and crafts. When her husband's health was weak, Flora Annie Steel took over some of his responsibilities. She also wrote a popular history of India. John F. Riddick describes Steel's The Hosts of the Lord as one of the "three significant works" produced by Anglo-Indian writers on Indian missionaries, along with The Old Missionary (1895) by William Wilson Hunter and Idolatry (1909) by Alice Perrin. Among her other literary associates in India was Bithia Mary Croker. The Title 'The Potter's Thumb: A Novel written/authored/edited by Flora Annie Steel', published in the year 2023. Paperback. Condition: New. 380 About The Book : It is impossible that the life of Nurjahan the Beautiful should remain unwritten. Of reliable historical incident much is available, of equally reliable tradition still more; the whole going to make up a life marvellous in its romance, touching in its humanity. In this sketch of it I have adhered in all matters of importance to the evidence of contemporaneous witnesses. That I have given a different complexion to them in many cases, I admit; but no careful student of character and motive could avoid doing so. Briefly, Nurjahan's extraordinary personality and power which even in these days would raise criticism in a woman exposed her in the seventeenth century to inevitable traducing. Sinister motives were found for her every action; above all, personal ambition was held to be her ruling motive. This assertion is, to my mind, pulverized by the undenied fact that, after her husband, the Emperor Jahangir's, death, she voluntarily retired from all public life and lived a widow indeed. In like manner she is credited with much plotting and planning, of which beyond the statement of her enemies no trace is to be found either in her character or her actions. Thus, her sudden abandonment of Shahjahan is set down to personal pique and greed; but it is curiously coincident with his brother Khushrau's sudden death when in the former's custody; a death suspicious of poison to many, even in those days. About The Author : Flora Annie Steel (2 April 1847 12 April 1929) was a writer who lived in British India for 22 years.
