Making a bargain with the devil, she decides to try a little black magic of her own to save the man she loves . In Soviet Moscow, God is dead, but the devil - to say nothing of his retinue of demons, from a loudmouthed, gun-toting tomcat, to the fanged fallen angel Koroviev - is very much alive. Soft cover. Condition: As New. Askew, Christopher Conn (illustrator). 1st Edition. Newly Revised Translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Foreword by Boris Fishman. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. "Nothing in the whole of literature compares with THE MASTER AND MARGARITA. One spring afternoon, the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow. Mikhail Bulgakov's fantastical, funny, and devastating satire of Soviet life combines two distinct yet interwoven parts, one set in contemporary Moscow, the other in ancient Jerusalem, each brimming with historical, imaginary, frightful, and wonderful characters. Written during the darkest days of Stalin's reign, and finally published in 1966 and 1967, THE MASTER AND MARGARITA became a literary phenomenon, signaling artistic and spiritual freedom for Russians everywhere. This newly revised translation, by the award-winning team of Pevear and Volokhonsky, is made from the complete and unabridged Russian text." [publisher copy] "My favorite novel--it's just the greatest explosion of imagination, craziness, satire, humor, and heart."--Daniel Radcliffe. "From the first page I was immediately beguiled, leading me to my year of reading Bulgakov, drawing me to venture to Moscow to seek out the landmarks in the book, and the author's grave, which is steps away from the grave of Gogol."--Patti Smith, The New York Times Book Review. "Nude vampires, gun-toting talking black cat, and devil as ultimate party starter aside, the miracle of this novel is that every time you read it, it's a different book."--Marlon James. Pristine paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp deckle edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine, French flaps & colorful cover illustrations by C.C. Askew.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated 'First U. S. Edition' with identifying Harper 'I-R' below it. I made a very thorough examination, turning over every single page. Hence, my description of the condition is likely to be more accurate than many others, catching small imperfections, etc. There are some in this book, thus I have priced the book at the very low end (actually below) the other dust jacketed first editions. Quite a few of these firsts are selling at nearly twice to more than three times as much as this one. Beginning with the black covers which you can see in the photos: on the front there are two superficial scratches and two tiny bumps. Below the top edge of the spine there are several thin wrinkles, also a little crinkling (no tears) at the top edge. Both the top and bottom edges of the spine have color fading from black to tan or brown, more so at the bottom. The bottom edge has minor crinkling, no tears. A little of the gilt on part of the 'D' in 'AND' is partly rubbed off. The cover edges are in very good condition, no rubbing. The same goes for the cover corners, very good condition and no rubbing. The pages edges look very good. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is very solidly bound, no cracks or spaces between any of the pages or between the covers and any of the pages. The covers are nicely, tightly, bound as well. I'll give you the important positive first and then get into the description of the imperfections: The pages are exceptionally clean. I didn't find any soiling at all with one exception, the last page of the text which has a few areas of a light yellow discoloration that it pulled over from the mustard-colored rear end paper. The front side of the last page does not have any discoloration. A number early pages have a light diagonal crinkle off their top edge, another way to put it-- there is a very slight space where it slightly dips, rather than being perfectly flat. Six consecutive pages, beginning at page 5, have a little bit of bumpiness, a pebbly look and feel (no scuffs or tears). It's just off the top edge on both sides of the juncture coming down about 1/2 inch and going across anywhere between 1 and 1 1/2 inches, none of it touching the print. Over the entirety of the pages I counted six instances of a top corner crease, light but possibly a placeholder crease. I didn't see any other creasing. I found one instance of a little nick at the middle edge of seven consecutive pages, no tears. Three of these pages also have a thin crinkle with a tiny bump near their center. Another five consecutive pages have a tiny nick at their middle edge, no tears (there are no tears on any of the pages in the book). Beside pulling some of the coloring on to the last text page, there is some of the same pebbly texture to the paper just off the top edge. This is also the case off the top edge of the mustard-colored rear end paper which also has crinkling. Presumably the two pages were slightly stuck together, though not enough to pull any paper over from one to the next. There's also a small crease at the top corner of both pages. The verso side of the last printed page also has this pebbly texture off its top edge. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Moving along to the dust jacket. It's quite clean and in very nice shape, just one 1/4" tear off the rear top edge. There is a thin crease under the front top edge, same with the rear top edge. The flaps look very good, very clean, one thin crease off the front top edge, a tiny crease at the rear bottom corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It's in a fitted protective cover. 'The underground masterpiece of twentieth-century Russian fiction, written during Stalin?s regime.' The Master and Margarita is listed in Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century. Good book for Russians to take a look at these days.
