First edition, English issue. First printing of the beloved children's classic, the only printing with the dazzling original color lithographs by Nicholson. This book captures the wistful attachment to our childhood toys through the story of a stuffed rabbit that hopes the love of its owner can make it real. It is one of the great collaborations in modern children's books, with the lithographs and the text equally invoking bittersweet affection: "You were Real to the Boy [.] because he loved you." Later printings did not use lithography to produce Nicholson's drawings, making the first printing especially distinctive in the quality of its lustrous illustrations. Scarce in any condition. 9.5'' x 7''. Original pictorial paper boards, carefully restored at extremities. Original expertly restored pictorial dust jacket. Color pictorial rabbit endpapers. Illustrated with 4 full-page and 3 double-page color lithographs. [8], 19, [1] pages. Two letters laid in regarding the difficulty of reprinting the book "at an obtainable price." Housed in a custom clamshell box and chemise. Cracking to one part of text block, paper repair to corner of page 9, only faint foxing and soiling. Very good in expertly restored dust jacket.

First edition. Paper covered boards with Nicholson's illustrations to the covers, in the original publisher's pictorial dustwrapper with same design as the covers. A near fine copy, with a short split to foot of the upper joint, light spotting to early pages, in a very good dustwrapper with a small chip to foot of spine, a little fraying to the head and a couple of short closed tears to edges. Overall, a very well preserved example of a rare and fragile book. Endpapers illustrated in colour with lots of drawings of little rabbits. Seven wonderful colour illustrations, some double page, all in lovely bold colours and each with a caption printed at the bottom. This book is a classic children's tale and one which has been loved by generations of children. The book tells of the Velveteen Rabbit's longing to become "real". His friend the skin horse tells him he can only achieve this once a child loves him. The lovely story is accompanied by illustrations which are completely in harmony with the text. This is a delicate book which is now highly sought after, very elusive, and difficult to find in such nice condition as this.
