Hardcover, Slipcased. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Sue Gent (illustrator). 1st Edition. Signed by the cover artist Sue Gent One of the most beloved children?s stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination. Willy Wonka?s famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life! First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl?s story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence. Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other?s trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story. Roald Dahl?s classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. ARTIST EDITION 7? x 10? trim size. 220 Pages. Limited to 1250 copies. Full cloth, smyth-sewn binding with embossed cover. Dust jacket resembling Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar wrapper (the only edition featuring the dust jacket). First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author "To David & Valerie, Love Roald, Christmas, 1983". The recipients were Dahl's friends Valerie Finnis (1924-2006) and her husband Sir David Scott (1887-1986). Valerie was an expert horticulturist working at the Waterperry Horticultural School for Women, near Oxford. After the death of Dahl's daughter Olivia in 1962, Valerie helped Dahl - a passionate gardener himself - to build an intricate alpine garden around her grave, with about 120 different species of plants, some of which exceptionally rare and never grown before in England. "With [her] help. he was fashioning an exquisite miniature world - understated, but powerful in its sombre organic melancholy - and one that would always require his constant care and attention" (Sturrock, p. 389). The book was first published the previous year in the UK by Jonathan Cape. The US edition changes the original printed order of the rhymes. Donald Sturrock, Storyteller: the Life of Roald Dahl, 2010. Octavo. Original pictorial boards, spine and front cover lettered in yellow and white. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Quentin Blake. Spine ends and corners gently bumped with touch of rubbing, board edges slightly faded, contents clean. A very good copy in like jacket, not price-clipped, a little worn and creased at extremities, spine and front panel faded, spine panel ends and folds ends chipped, closed tears to foot of spine panel and head of rear panel, remaining quite bright.

First edition, early printing of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Love Doug Roald Dahl 1984." Additionally signed by Quentin Blake below. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of the twentieth century. Dahl's ability to twist words into a clever and creative new language is fascinating to children, and is evident in BFG. The gruesome descriptions of the horrid giants and the subtle allusions to other stories will entertain children young and old. An animated adaptation was released in theatres in 1987 with David Jason providing the voice of the BFG and Amanda Root as the voice of Sophie. It was also the basis for the 2016 film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader.

Inscribed by Dahl on front free endpaper: "To / Amanda / Love / Roald Dahl / 1980 / [flourish]". Publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to spine; original cream-colored dust jacket with Blake illustrations to front and rear panels, lettered in red and black. Two light creases to front board, else fine book; about fine unclipped dust jacket, with just some light fading to spine. Overall, a lovely copy. The Twits is a darkly humorous children's story that centers around a horrid married couple. The two, Mr. and Mrs. Twit, despise each other and engage in a series of abusive pranks against one another involving a glass eye, worms, and balloons. The two get their comeuppance when a group of monkeys called Muggle-Wumps glue the Twits' furniture to the ceiling, making them think that they are upside down. The Twits is a Roald Dahl classic, featuring two of his nastiest villains. The book was listed as number 81 in the BBC's The Big Read, a United Kingdom-wide survey to determine the 200 best-loved books. Amazingly, nine of Dahl's books made the list. Signed by Author.

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Happy Christmas Hugo, Love, Roald Dahl, 1985, x". Dahl and Blake had achieved considerable success with The Enormous Crocodile in 1978, and this, another picture book for young children, was a worthy successor. Dahl dedicated the work to his three stepdaughters. When Dahl delivered the typescript to his English publisher, Tom Maschler responded with a note stating "Vintage Dahl. And with new aspects as well. What more could one ask?" A review in the Times Literary Supplement noted "there are better things than this in children's literature but this will fill that space where the ego and the libido run riot, where the only relationship is the camaraderie between fellow gluttons". Quarto. Original illustrated boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, dark blue endpapers. No dust jacket issued. Illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake. Minor tears to head and foot of spine, corners slightly rubbed, minor indentations to front cover and edges, minor foxing to title page; a very good and bright copy.

First edition, first printing. Published by Cape in London, 1988. This is a fine copy. The signature of Blake flat-signed to the front endpaper shows above that of Dahl's to a personal bookplate beneath. The dust wrapper, illustrated by Quentin Blake is fine, save for a small nick to the head of the spine and has been neatly price clipped. The boards are free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are immaculate. Overall, this is a fine copy. In 2003, Matilda was listed at number 74 in The Big Read, a BBC survey of the British public of the top 200 novels of all time. In 2012, Matilda was ranked number 30 among all-time best children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a US monthly. Time magazine named Matilda in its list of the 100 Best Young-Adult Books of All Time. In 2012, Matilda Wormwood appeared on a Royal Mail commemorative postage stamp.

First edition, first impression, signed and dated "Roald Dahl 6 March, 1982" on the front free endpaper in purple. Jeremy Treglown found that the book "owes something to a circus act or a Punch and Judy show", and notes that Quentin Blake "lightens things by visually reminding the reader both how small George is, and. how lonely and innocent". A contemporary review noted that, "For some time now Roald Dahl has been the most popular living novelist that we have for children, despite, or sometimes possibly because of, lapses in taste. George's Marvellous Medicine is a good example of this ability he has to entertain the young often at the cost of offending many of the other sort". Times Literary Supplement, 24 July 1981, p. 839; Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl, a biography, 1994, p. 229. Octavo. Original light blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Quentin Blake. A copy with notably bright contents. Minor damp staining to head of rear cover and free endpapers, foxing to top edge; some damp staining and light foxing to jacket, spine slightly sunned, occasional minor loss to extremities, not price-clipped: a very good copy in a very good jacket.

First edition, early printing of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Boldly signed by the author on the half-title page, "with love Roald Dahl April, 1989." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, bookplate.

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "To Jonathan with love Roald Dahl, Dec. 1980". The inscription is written on the rear free endpaper upside-down, in keeping with the topsy-turvy rear panel of the dust jacket. The jacket blurb commences, "Mr and Mrs Twit are dreadful". Dahl wrote this tale as a deliberate reaction to the typical saccharine story for children he thought flooded the market. In a letter to Dahl about The Twits, his editor agreed: "I like it VERY MUCH. You're right: what we want (or should want) for these little ones is stuff with meat, not the yuchy [sic] sweetly pretty material we're exposed to" (Sturrock, p. 504). Donald Sturrock, Storyteller: The Authorized Biography of Roald Dahl, 2010. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Quentin Blake. Internally fresh; jacket spine sunned, else bright, a little marked and creased, couple of nicks and one short closed tear, not price-clipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

First edition, first impression, signed by both author and illustrator on the front free endpaper. It is rare to find The BFG with contemporary signatures by both Dahl and Blake. The illustrator has included the date "September 1982". There is no precise publication date recorded for this title, although the uncorrected proof notes a provisional date of 14 October 1982. Given that the title was reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement on 26 November 1982, this is undoubtedly a copy with very early signatures. Dahl's fantastical tale was expanded from a short story found in his 1975 book Danny, the Champion of the World, and was described in the dust jacket blurb as "Dahl's most startling and wonderful tale since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". A film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, was released in 2016. Jeremy Treglown assesses Dahl's legacy in his biography and notes that not all of the author's books will last, but concludes "the best - especially The BFG - surely will". Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl, 1994, p. 9. Octavo. Original light grey boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Black and white illustrations within the text, all by Quentin Blake. Head of spine slightly bumped, browning to contents as usual; slight toning to reverse of jacket, not price-clipped; a near-fine copy in a near-fine jacket.
