First edition, first printing, first issue, in the first state dust jacket, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "For Richard, Always young in heart, with affection, Roald, March 1965" on rear free endpaper. In the words of his biographer Donald Sturrock this is Dahl's "most famous children's book". The US edition precedes the UK edition by three years. The first issue can be distinguished by the six lines of printing information on the final page; this was cut to five in subsequent issues. The first state of the dust jacket does not carry an ISBN number on the lower cover. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been made into two musical films, one in 1971 directed by Mel Stuart and starring Gene Wilder as Wonka, and another in 2005 directed by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp as the factory owner. A musical with book by David Greig, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman included numbers from the 1971 film and ran in London between 2013 and 2017. A slightly reworked version ran on Broadway between 2017 and 2018. A film exploring Willy Wonka's origins, entitled simply Wonka, is forthcoming. The character of Willy Wonka will be played by Timothée Chalamet. The book is considered the author's most enduring and popular work for children. It has been adapted for radio, video games, a theme park ride, audiobooks, pop-up books, a stage play, colouring books, and an opera. In 2012, Charlie Bucket appeared on a Royal Mail stamp. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover with design in blind, rear cover with publisher's device in blind, yellow endpapers, top edge purple. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and illustrations throughout by Joseph Schindelman. Head of spine slightly bumped, minor marks to foot of spine, jacket very slightly toned, minor abrasions to spine, price-clipped; a near-fine copy in a very good jacket.

A pair of first edition, first printings, published by Alfred Knopf in 1964 and 1972. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A near fine copy (the third issue with four lines on the colophon page) with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a very good unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: A near fine copy with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. A superb pair of books with a strong association to Dahl himself. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's prep school in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca.

Concerning the adventures of four nasty children and Our Hero with Mr. Willy Wonka and his famous candy plant. Darkly humorous, slightly creepy, and ultimately the tale of a nice guy who just might finish first, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of the prolific Roald Dahl's most popular works. Life changes for a poor but kindhearted boy named Charlie Bucket when he manages to win one of five golden tickets that allows him and a guest of his choice to tour the chocolate factory of an eccentric and reclusive candy inventor named Willy Wonka. On the big day, Charlie and the other visitors are warned to obey all of Mr. Wonka's strict, but rather strange, rules for behavior. What will happen if they disobey? And why has Mr. Wonka allowed them to tour his factory in the first place? Introduces readers to such unforgettable characters as the hardworking Oompa-Loompas, the extremely spoiled Veruca Salt, and, as readers will soon discover, the aptly named Violet Beauregarde. 162 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author(s). Book.

Hardcover, Slipcased. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Sue Gent (illustrator). 1st Edition. Signed by the cover artist Sue Gent One of the most beloved children?s stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination. Willy Wonka?s famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life! First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl?s story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence. Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other?s trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story. Roald Dahl?s classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. ARTIST EDITION 7? x 10? trim size. 220 Pages. Limited to 1250 copies. Full cloth, smyth-sewn binding with embossed cover. Dust jacket resembling Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar wrapper (the only edition featuring the dust jacket). Full color throughout with over 50 color illustrations by Quentin Blake. 72 additional illustrations from the artists who have illustrated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through the years: Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake. Over 60 pages of bonus content including deleted chapters, an alternate ending, manuscript pages and handwritten notes from early drafts. 1986 reply letter from Roald Dahl to Paul Suntup. New exclusive introduction by Donald Sturrock, author of the critically acclaimed biography of Roald Dahl. Note by publisher Paul Suntup. Printed offset on archival Cougar Natural.
