Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The second ever appearance of William Burroughs now classic Naked Lunch, being the second chapter of it, published in the great Chicago Review issue from 1958. The publication caused quite a stir, particularly in Chicago and at the press where the two editors resigned following the scandal. Overall a very good copy, being well bound and internall clean. From the home of a tobacco smoker, so there is a very faint aroma as well as some consumate toning to extremities. One small nick to the rear cover, very lightly scuffed along the spine edge. Interior is crisp, with light signs of use, such as the occasional indent from being held and read, or the occasional bend at the page corner - else excellent condition, now in mylar.

8vo. 88 pages. Printed wrappers. Containing chapter two of 'Naked Lunch.' This was the second appearance of any section of the novel in print, following the Spring issue of the journal. For those keeping track, the headline above the text contains the misprint "William C. Burroughs." "The 1958 appearance of a Naked Lunch excerpt in the Chicago Review created a scandal that ended in the resignation of the magazine's two editors, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll. The controversy was initiated when an editorial review by Chicago Daily News columnist Jack Mabley, appeared under the title 'Filthy Writing on the Midway.' Mabley objected to what he called "'obscene' writing in the University of Chicago's literary magazine. Published alongside Burroughs in the Chicago Review were Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and other young and unconventional writers of the period" (Columbia University exhibition). Rosenthal went on to write one of the great (woefully unheralded) novels of the era, 'Sheeper,' in which Burroughs and the Beats appear. Some light wear and toning at extremities, but a very good copy.

A classic Beat Generation era issue, containing a selection from Burroughs's Naked Lunch, plus two letters by Allen Ginsberg (mentions Kerouac and Corso), prose by Philip Whalen, etc. Largish price stamp to cover (no other markings), light overall wear, a few pages have light marginal spots. Small scuff to spine with some toning along edges and a previous owner's surname in pen at top corner, but covers are clean and crisp overall with no chips or tears. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Not an ex-library copy. Second appearance of material from Naked Lunch prior to the book's publication, the first chapter having appeared in the Review's Spring 1958 issue. The Winter 1959 issue containing a third installment had already gone to press when a front-page Chicago Daily News editorial titled "Filthy Writing on the Midway" led the University Chancellor to order the editors to remove any potentially scandalous or obscene material. Within days all but one editor resigned, with Editor Irving Rosenthal and Poetry Editor Paul Carroll publishing the issue's intended contents in their new magazine Big Table with First Issue's subtitle: "The Complete Contents of the Suppressed Winter 1959 Chicago Review."
