First Edition
First edition, first issue of Tolkien's classic tale, "among the very highest achievements of childrenâ s authors during the 20th centuryâ (Carpenter & Pritchard, 530). Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece and 9 full-page uncolored illustrations after drawings by Tolkien. Very good in a unrestored first-issue dust jacket with the hand-correction to "Dodgeson" on the rear inside flap in a very good first-issue dust jacket with loss at upper margin of front panel and head of spine, price-clipped. Published on September 21, 1937 with a first printing of only 1500 copies, The Hobbit had completely sold out by December 15. Rare and desirable without any of the usual restoration. "In enchanted Middle-earth, a small, comfort-loving Hobbit is awakened from his slumbers by a visitor who tells of lost treasure. Before Bilbo Baggins returns home again, he journeys past wizards and elves, talkative trees and treasure-guarding dragons, all swirling in cosmic battle between good and evil. J.R.R. Tolkien's fully realized fantasy world won over generations of children, and dazzled adults with its deft interweaving of medieval legend and made-up languages, maps, and creatures. Tolkien legitimized the modern fantasy genre, and provided the 1960's counterculture with antiwar, back-to-Eden icons" (NYPL Books of the Century 199). â Professor Tolkienâ s epic of Middle Earthâ ¦ [is] one of [the twentieth] centuryâ s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age. There are few such booksâ "Gulliverâ s Travels, The Pilgrimâ s Progress, Robinson Crusoe, Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willowsâ "what else?â ¦ [They are] destined to become this centuryâ s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasureâ (Eyre, 67, 134-5). All historians of childrenâ s literatureâ ¦ agree in placing [The Hobbit] among the very highest achievements of childrenâ s authors during the 20th centuryâ (Carpenter & Prichard, 254, 530). Published on September 21, 1937 in a first printing of only 1500 copies, The Hobbit had completely sold out by December 15. â It may have been a surprise to its publishers that a work as sui generis as The Hobbit should have been a popular success, but once it was a success there can have been no surprise in the clamor for a sequel. Tolkien had opened up a new imaginative continent, and the cry now was to see more of itâ (Shippey, 49).

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing, Second Impression, 1937 : A near fine very clean copy in the ORIGINAL EXTREMELY SCARCE DUST JACKET, NOT PRICE CLIPPED. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. The First Printing was the only printing in which all the artistic illustration plates are in black and white. The second impression was printed in December the same year in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder, Key and Whiting, in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940) and was the first printing to convert four of the author?s black and white illustration plates to color. These were initially commissioned for and later published in the American edition. [Hammond A3a.] Please note ? Currently only two first printings (in the original dust jacket) are listed today, both listed for upwards and $200,000.00 and up; and currently there is not a second printing in the original dust jacket listed. A lovely near fine clean book. The boards are without the common fraying or brittleness. Instead the cloth is all present, and in supple condition, overall clean with some very slight age toning to the cloth. The book has sharp corners, one lightly pushed, and a square tight binding. The original decorative map end papers are present and clean and bright. The book is in beautiful clean condition with no bookplates, no owner names, no handling marks, no stains, no bent pages, one small original bookstore sticker to lower front end paper. Lightly foxed to the outer page block. A remarkably clean book in excellent collectible condition. Please see all the images. The exceedingly scarce original dust jacket is present and NOT price clipped (of the few remaining second printing jackets most tend to be price clipped). The jacket has benefited from some restoration by an expert paper conservator to several intact tears (one larger, one smaller), and a small 3/4 inch triangular chip to the upper white area of front panel (located in between the two birds). The jacket presents beautifully with strong vibrant colors and with but some slight toning to the white area of the front panel and with slight sunning to the spine (as common with this title). The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of 7s 6d. net, along with the requisite ?Second Impression? stated just above the price on the inner flap. Please see numerous detailed images. A superb first edition, second printing in very clean condition. All images available in high resolution format upon request. Shipping via UPS Express, direct delivery and signed for with full insurance. ADDITIONAL 20 IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our ABE store for additional landmark rare book titles.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Condition: Near-Fine. 1st edition: 4th impression, so stated on the limitation page. The only real defect on the book is a small stain on the text block foreedge, The book is very clean inside and out, and the covers and spine are clean and bright. Text also clean and bright. The maps of Lonely Mountain in the front and Wilderland in the back also clean and bright, with just a tiny hint of age browning on the edge of the Wilderland free end paper. A 1-inch tear has been closed and repaired at the bottom of pps. 127-128, and the front free endpaper map page has 2 very slight creases, one on the upper right corner, and another on the following blank page. The book has been conserved, and Tolkien s famous original jacket has in addition been expertly restored to near-pristine condition. The 4th impression was the last printing of Tolkien s original story, before his revisions to the book in the early 1950s to more closely comport with the story of The Lord of the Rings, then in progress.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1942) The Hobbit or There and Back Again , UK first book club edition using the first edition, third impression sheets, published by The Children s Book Club by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin. Condition: a near fine copy. There are no previous owners inscriptions, names, no bookplates, no stamps. The original chrome yellow boards are in nice shape with a little shelf wear and light tonong to the spine. The lettering on the spine is nicely visible with just a touch of rubbing as shown. Internally clean with no illustrations coloured in as often found. The page block with a whiff of faint foxing spots as shown, otherwise unmarked. The war economy standard paper used for this edition is preserved remarkably well. The original dust jacket is not present. Publication history: In late 1942 George Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression and 3,000 copies for the children s book club to be sold by Foyles. The sheets were supplied to Foyles unbound and they were bound in cheaper boards without the dragon design familar with the regular trade edition. Also, no maps as endpapers were used. As opposed to Tolkien s own beautiful dust jacket, an orange-red wrapper showing a fat, dandified Bilbo. Tolkien loathed the design so much that it was not repeated again and this book club edition has remained an anomaly in the early publication history of the much loved childrens book. Since the boards used are much thinner and the paper the economy standard it is difficult to find copies that have survived the passage of time in decent condition if at all since book club editions tend to be unloved or discarded. First and Fine.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. This is the 1st US Edition, 1st state. SD. NAP. With the bowing hobbit on the title page; chapter VII mis-identified as chapter VI on page 118; and pastedown maps are reverse of order shown on the "List of Illustrations" page. The four color and nine B&W illustrations are present. Good, in a new facsimile dustjacket. Typical flaws as seen in such a well-loved, well-read book (photos attached). There is wear at the spine extremities, and at the corner tips; and some wear along the front outer hinge. The spine is sun-darkened, but the lettering appears unaffected. There is rubbed surface soil to the boards; with a few small stains, and two thin ~3/8" pen marks on the rear board. The front hinge is split between the first blank and the frontis; shaken. The rear hinge is cracked. The page edges are typically age-darkened, and the endpapers are slightly so. There is a tasteful bookplate on the first blank (with a previous owners name and 1938 date). There is a small, light stain at the fore-edge of the reverse of the frontis (not visible in the frontis illustration). There is a fairly light stain along the fore-edge of the rear flyleaf (visible only on the blank side; not on the map face). The facsimile DJ is new. A scarce edition in any condition. ; 27D; 8" x 6"; 310 pages.

1st Thus. 12.3 x 18.8cm yellow cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine, 310pp (with the original version of the encounter with Gollum) on War Economy Standard paper, with 8 black and white illustrations. Supplied with a facsimile dust jacket. Printed by Unwin Brothers alongside the 3rd impression sheets bound for Allen & Unwin (see later note) and first Book Club edition. The boards are sound, with firm square fore edge corners. There is a faint narrow band toned/dust band across the top edge of the boards and down the front fore edge, a few marks on the front board (see images) and a small dent on the back board at the fore edge. The spine is uniformly tones and the "gilt" has discoloured. The binding is very tight and square and there is light spotting to the edges of the text block. Internally, the inner hinges are perfectly intact. The pastedown has a small 2x1cm label and neat gift inscription dated June 1943 and both pastedowns and opposing pages have a few light spots, otherwise, the pages are remarkably clean and fresh. By way of protection, the book is now covered in a high quality facsimile dust jacket (printed on a single sheet of acid-free archival paper using seventy-year, fade-resistant inks - it is not a photocopy). The designer of this dust jacket appears unknown, perhaps because Tolkien's own comment opinion of it was: 'Surely the paper wasted on that hideous dust-cover could have been better used.' [We have many images of the book on file so please for any others you would like to see]. A scarce early edition, particularly is such good over all condition. Following the 1,488 copies of the first edition, a second impression of 2,300 copies was printed by Unwin Brothers and bound in the Allen & Unwin binding in 14 separate batches from Dec 1937 to June 1940. In November 1940, the remaining 423 unbound copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire caused by bombing. Foyles bookshop sought agreement to issue The Hobbit as part of their Children's Book Club series, thereby enabling Allen & Unwin to reprint the book which was most advantageous given the loss of their previous remaining stock. Accordingly, a third impression of 4,500 copies were printed by Unwin Brothers in November 1942, 1,500 of them under the Allen & Unwin imprint to be bound in the familiar green Allen & Unwin binding, and 3,000 under the Children's Book Club imprint, to be bound independently (though without colour frontispiece and map endpapers), in yellow cloth with its own orange on white dust jacket. (The Allen & Unwin edition omitted all of the colour lates except the frontispiece). Three corrections were made to the text: (1) p14 l17, 'find morning' to 'fine morning' (2) p183, the double quotation marks were reversed (3) p216 l4, 'leas' changed to 'least' (4) p229 l16, 'you imagination' to 'your imagination' [p85 l10, remains uncorrected 'under under the mountain'. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care.

With war economy standard paper. George Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression and 3,000 copies to be sold by Foyles. The sheets supplied to Foyles were unbound and so the edition was published with cheap, simple boards with no map end papers. Plus a large Bilbo as the illustration on the dust jacket. Tolkien disliked the publication so much that no further book club editions were published. With thinner boards and economy paper there are few numbers of this publication to be found in a decent condition. Original worn yellow cloth boards with faded gilt lettering on the spine. The text edges have slight soiling and staining, there is light thumbing on the top edge through the list of illustrations, and the top edge of pg. 13 creased. Hompen, eller En resa dit och tillbaksigen ("The Hobbit, or A journey there and back again"), translated to Swedish by Tore Zetterholm, illustrated by Torbjörn Zetterholm (interior illustrations) and Charles Sjöblom (cover and maps). Extremely scarce first translation of The Hobbit, also the only translation of the Hobbit from the first UK edition before the changes Tolkien made to the text after writing the Lord of the Rings, and the first translation of any of the author's books. Tolkien took great umbrage at Förbundets failure to use the book's correct title and their changing of the original text. As a result, this edition was suppressed and replaced by an approved translation entitled 'Bilbo' (Hallqvist, 1962). Publisher's cloth-backed illustrated boards, endpaper maps. Except for a scrape on the back due to a removed price sticker, the book is in an excellent condition. The fragile boards have exceptionally little wear and binding and spine are also in a superb condition. Clean pages without names, inscriptions or dog ears. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. In good condition! A small waterstained stain on page 111 which is now dry. The binding is holds well. Slightly forward leaning but not much at all. Has waterstains on back. Two dog-eared pages from previous reader.
First Portuguese edition; 8vo; full-page illustrations by António Quadros, age-toning to text block, some minor marks and stains, remains of small label to front free endpaper, 1979 newspaper cutting about John Travolta loosely inserted between pp322-323 causing additional browning; publisher's illustrated boards, somewhat marked, rubbed and bumped, map endpapers. The first and only edition in this format, possibly due to Tolkien's dislike of the translation of the word Hobbit. Delightfully illustrated and decidedly uncommon thus.

A first edition, first printing of the first appearance in paperback published by Puffin in 1961 and decorated by Pauline Baynes. A near fine book without inscriptions. Some rubbing to the edges and corners. A little spotting to the prelims. A very presentable copy indeed and a more economic alternative to the mega expensive hardcover first edition. 'The Hobbit' was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. It has been adapted into films, starring Peter Jackson, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom. The first edition paperback was a significant publication as it introduced Tolkien's work to a wider and younger audience. This edition featured cover art by Pauline Baynes, who created iconic illustrations that helped define the visual representation of Tolkien's world, as well as C S Lewis' 'Narnia'. The paperback format made the book more accessible and contributed to its popularity, eventually leading to the widespread recognition of Tolkien's Middle-earth universe.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Near pristine copy of the very scarce Faroese translation of The Hobbit, translated from English into Faroese by Axel Tórgarð, published by Hoyvík: Stiðin. The Faoese runes - unique to this edition - are drawn by Valdemar Dalsgaard & Jóhan Hendrik Winther Poulsen. This is a brand new, unread copy of this scarce edition in a near pristine condition. Faroese is a North Germanic language spoken as a first language by about 72000 Faroe Islanders. The Faroese translation is hard to find and very difficult to get shipped abroad from the Faroe Islands. From the review in Tíðindablaðið Sosialurin, 12th December 1990: "The translation has been carried out in such a way that it never crosses the reader's mind that this is a translation. Which is to say that it is masterly. I don't remember a better and more vivid Faroese translation. Moreover, the translation has benefited from the splendid language of dragons and myth which is to be found in our collection of medieval ballads".

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Puffin 1961, First Hobbit Paperback. One of the finest copies we've sold. The usual paper yellowing, slight lean, owners signature in pen. The cover has only minor wear, scuffing to spine edges, but no fading or scratching as usually found. Except for the age realted wear, read once condition which is rare for a paperback.
